Prof. Andrea Crisanti addresses the World Food Forum 2023

During the week of October 16th to 20th, at the Headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in Rome, the World Food Forum (WFF) held its annual flagship event, bringing together global experts, passionate changemakers, and visionary leaders under the theme: “Agrifood systems transformation accelerates climate action.”

On the third day Prof. Andrea Crisanti took center stage as a Keynote speaker during the session “Innovation Breakthroughs.” The session, opened by the Director General of FAO, Mr. QU Dongyu, featured other distinguished speakers, including Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Cary Fowler, Special Envoy for Global Food Security, United States Department of State, and His Excellency, Guang Defu, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to FAO.

Responding to the Director General's remarks on the critical need for science, technology, enabling policies, and responsible investments to enhance the resilience of global agrifood systems in the face of climate crises, conflicts, and economic challenges, Prof. Crisanti explained how the genetic technology platform originally developed at Imperial College London for controlling the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae can be leveraged to effectively combat the most harmful agricultural pests that jeopardize the food security of billions.

"In a world in which the population is continually growing, arable land is nearly exhausted, and global warming threatens our entire food production, losing 25% of the annual agricultural production to insects is a luxury we cannot afford," stated Prof. Crisanti. "Innovative insect control solutions, such as the one that we developed at Imperial College, can play a pivotal role in enhancing the resilience of our agricultural systems."
